Chai in India is an emotion.
It’s The First conversation of the morning, the comfort after a long day, the companion during rainy afternoon, and sometimes its simply a reason to sit down and talk.
Every day, India drinks millions of cups of tea.
But here is a question that very few of us ever ask?
What exactly is in our cup?
Usually, we know tea as Assam Tea, Darjeeling Tea, or Nilgiri Tea.
Or we simply say black tea, green tea or white tea.
But there is a whole world between the region and the cup in your hand.
It starts with the garden itself.
Take Assam, for example.
Two tea gardens can be located relatively close to each other and still produce teas with very different characters.
Why?
Because tea is a reflection of where it grows and how it is made.
The tea clones used(P126, TV9, TV1 etc), the soil, rainfall, temperature, altitude, surrounding vegetation and the microclimate of a particular garden all play a role. Then comes the human part —different plucking standards, handling, sorting,withering and finally manufacturing.
And This is exactly where the idea of single-origin tea becomes interesting.
Single-origin tea means that the tea comes from a single, identifiable source, rather than being blended with teas from multiple gardens or origins.
In estate or garden-specific tea, you can trace the tea back to one particular garden. And that matters because the garden leaves its own signature on the cup.
And this is also why simply calling a tea “Assam tea” doesn’t tell you the whole story.
And perhaps that is the part we often miss when we drink our everyday cup of We know the tea by the region.
But there is a story behind the region.
There is a specific garden behind the tea.
And there are people behind the garden.
So the next time you make yourself a cup of tea, take a moment before the first sip.
Ask yourself:
Where did these leaves come from?
Not just which state.
Not just which type of tea.
But Which garden?
Because once you know the origin of your tea, the cup becomes a little more interesting.
And perhaps that is the real beauty of single-origin tea—you don’t just know what you’re drinking.
You know where it began.
